Boston Red Sox tryout three African-American players.
April 16, 1945
While the team is on a road trip, Sam Jethroe, Jackie Robinson, and Marvin Williams try out at Fenway Park. The tryouts were granted only after prodding by Boston City Councilor Isidore Muchnick, sportswriter Jack Egan of the Boston Daily Record, and Wendell Smith of the Pittsburgh Courier. Although coach Hugh Duffy praises the players’ skills, none is offered a contract. Robinson subsequently writes, “Not for one minute did we believe the Boston tryout was sincere. We were going through the motions.” Robinson subsequently makes it to the major leagues with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947* and Jethroe with the Boston Braves in 1950.*
